When it comes to
English, there are 80 percent of English speakers with issues of insecurity and
fear. They speak with hesitation and apologize for their words. Instead of
speaking with confidence, they are negative and critical of their
pronunciation. It’s sad to witness people put such admirable effort into
speaking and they put themselves down.
This just so happens to be many of the students I have worked with or encountered in everyday travel. It’s important to acknowledge their effort to learn and remind them that this is not their first language.
As a teacher, I lighten up their insecurities and focus them on their strengths. They don’t remember prepositions neither do I sometimes when I’m writing. They don’t want to speak in front of their peers. Let them first tell a funny story to lighten the nervous feeling. If you speak a second language-speak a few words in your bad pronunciation and watch them laugh.
It’s important to emphasize that everyone has difficulties with language including myself who apparently sounds like a Turkish cartoon character when I speak Turkish.
Priscilla is not the teacher who is perfectly by the book with every single detail. Priscilla is the teacher who combines TOEFL with a dynamic learning experience. The element of social skills and creative exercises for speaking are important. Also, there is an emphasis on a white board mapping out principles and concrete examples and Power point presentation and notes. There is an emphasis on homework involving real experiences i.e. finding a poem and reading aloud, having a conversation with an English speaker using learned expression and questions, ordering food at a restaurant in English.
Students are challenged in comfortable and effective ways. There are many students who are very shy with speaking, but it just takes that safe environment for their English to grow and flourish. It’s amazing the amount of students who have gained self-esteem with their English, writing papers on their own, public speaking, and making business negotiation/presentations/interviews.
For many students abroad, they can learn in theory and have that hour with their teacher, but they don’t have the opportunity to practice. Their family may not speak English, their friends, or co-workers. With a hectic work schedule, they are challenged to practice with a native speaker or anyone at all. Students are given more opportunities to learn and practice outside of lesson. That is what it takes to learn English or any language-taking advantage of any and every opportunity to practice and be encouraged by the teacher.
As an addition to my lesson, I recommend various sources and sites to have verbal exercises, assignments, and live conversational exchange with English speakers. English is not something that requires a lesson, some studying, and continuing on with the day. Learning a language requires seizing learning opportunities at all times and expecting to make mistakes. The mistakes are actually the best part because that is where the learning comes in and improvement of pronunciation.
It is my true belief that anyone can learn English with the right teacher, the right learning tools and supports, the right practice, and the perfect amount of passion and persistence. This does not mean that the teacher is the only one doing the work-the student and teacher equally work hard and hard work pays off.
It would be an absolute pleasure working with a child, student, parent, professional, or young adult. Please contact me for further information about English lessons and Business English lessons and topics covered.
Look forward to the opportunity to work together!
